Chem3D Unit Cell Models

(Application/Uses of Chem3D Files)

The unit cell models can be projected on a large screen in a classroom or lecture hall using a computer projection system or overhead projection panel. The large screen images are much easier for the student to see than the typical commercial ball and stick models which are commonly used. By using the mouse pointer and selection tool, the instructor can help the student to focus on exactly the ions or unit cell faces that are being considered to illustrate packing, crystal coordination number, etc.

In the laboratory, a large screen monitor can be used to show the models as part of a computer simulation on x-ray diffraction or to illustrate how plastic foam balls and toothpicks can be used to construct models of the unit cells.

In small groups or individually, a student can have unlimited, convenient access to dynamic models of unit cells to study in contrast to only staring at a static textbook figure or recalling a model shown in class.
